What does a financially prepared pastoral retirement look like?
For pastors, retirement planning needs to go beyond simply asking how much money has been saved.
A comprehensive pastoral retirement strategy should consider pensions, housing, sustainable income, additional income streams, asset ownership and risk protection, while also preparing for life and purpose beyond the pulpit.
That is why the PASTOR Retirement Framework™ created by “The Retirement Queen” provides a practical way to examine the major areas of pastoral retirement planning.
The Seven Pillars of Pastoral Retirement
The framework uses the acronym P-A-S-T-O-R:
P — Pension
A — Accommodation
S — Sustainable Income
T — Two to Five Additional Income Streams
O — Ownership
R — Risk Protection
Let's look at each pillar.
P — Pension
Know exactly what retirement benefits you have.
Do not assume that having a pension automatically means you have a complete retirement plan.
Determine:
- How much you have accumulated
- When benefits become available
- What income they may provide
- Whether there are contribution gaps
- What happens if you change churches
- What happens to your spouse if you die first
Your pension can be an important part of retirement income, but it should be viewed as one pillar of retirement—not necessarily the entire building.
A — Accommodation
One of the most overlooked issues in pastoral retirement planning is housing.
If you live in a church-owned home or parsonage, ask:
“Where will I live when the church stops providing housing?”
Retirement may suddenly introduce expenses such as:
- Rent
- Mortgage payments
- Property taxes
- Utilities
- Maintenance
- Insurance
- Repairs
- Relocation costs
Housing should therefore be treated as both a retirement asset and retirement expense.
S — Sustainable Income
Retirement planning should not only ask:
“How much money will I have?”
Ask instead:
“How much reliable income can my assets and activities produce every month?”
This is a major distinction.
A pastor could have substantial accumulated assets but still lack a clear strategy for converting those assets into sustainable retirement income.
The objective is to create income resilience.
T — Two to Five Additional Income Streams
Pastors possess valuable knowledge, experience and relationships that may continue generating income beyond full-time ministry.
Potential income streams include:
- Books
- Online courses
- Speaking
- Leadership training
- Coaching
- Consulting
- Mentoring
- YouTube
- Podcasts
- Digital products
- Real estate
- Investment income
- Affiliate income
- Training programmes
- Ministry resources
The goal is not to build 20 businesses.
The goal is to develop two or three dependable additional income streams before retirement.
O — Ownership
Ask yourself:
“What do I own?”
Create an Asset Ownership Map covering five categories:
- Financial Assets
Savings, pensions, investments and securities.
- Property
Land, houses, rental properties and other real estate.
- Business Assets
Businesses, partnerships and income-producing ventures.
- Intellectual Property
Books, courses, training materials, recordings and online programmes.
- Digital Assets
Websites, email lists, YouTube channels, podcasts and digital products.
The long-term objective is to move from:
“I earn because I work.”
to:
“I own assets that can continue producing value and income.”
That is a foundation for retirement wealth.
R — Risk Protection
Building wealth is only part of retirement planning.
You also need to protect what you have built.
Review:
- Emergency savings
- Health insurance
- Life insurance where appropriate
- Disability or income protection where applicable
- Property insurance
- Debt
- Investment risk
- Estate planning
- Wills
- Beneficiary designations
One major uninsured event, excessive debt or poor estate planning can undermine years of financial progress.
Your PASTOR Retirement Framework™ Checklist
Before retirement, ask yourself:
P — Do I understand my pension?
A — Do I have a secure housing plan?
S — Do I know how much sustainable income I need?
T — Do I have two or more additional income streams?
O — Do I own assets that can produce future value?
R — Have I protected my family and my wealth?
The earlier you answer these questions, the more options you have.
