Apple is reportedly preparing to launch Apple Pay in India in late September or October 2026, although the company has not officially confirmed the timeline. The initial rollout is expected to support Visa and Mastercard credit cards, enabling iPhone and Apple Watch users to make secure, contactless payments through NFC technology. However, the service is not expected to include UPI integration at launch, positioning it primarily as a premium card payment solution.
India's digital payments landscape is already dominated by UPI, which processed 23.66 billion transactions worth ₹29.88 trillion in July 2026. With widespread acceptance across merchants, banks, and payment apps, UPI has become the country's preferred payment method. Apple Pay, on the other hand, is likely to appeal to users who prefer the convenience, security, and rewards associated with credit card payments rather than replacing the existing payment ecosystem.
Despite inevitable comparisons, Apple Pay is expected to complement rather than compete directly with UPI in its initial phase. As explained in the TechDogs article, Apple Pay offers a seamless, tokenized payment experience for premium users while retaining credit card benefits such as rewards, EMIs, and biometric authentication. Its long-term success in India will depend on broader merchant acceptance and whether Apple eventually brings UPI support to the platform.
If Apple integrates UPI in the future, it could become a stronger player in India's digital payments market. Until then, Apple Pay is likely to remain a premium payment option for iPhone users, while UPI continues to dominate everyday transactions with its unmatched reach, interoperability, and widespread consumer adoption.
