Instead of establishing the academy immediately, the order forms a NASA-led Presidential Commission that will determine how the institution should operate, including its governance, curriculum, admissions process, and long-term implementation. The proposed academy is intended to prepare future astronauts, engineers, scientists, military personnel, and commercial space professionals for America's expanding role in space.
Designed as a national center for technical education, leadership development, and public service, the academy aims to strengthen the country's future space workforce. The commission will also recommend accreditation standards, graduate service obligations, partnerships with existing educational institutions, and whether the academy should operate within NASA. Despite the announcement, there is currently no confirmed campus location, opening date, admissions schedule, or construction timeline.
The U.S. Space Academy remains in its planning phase, with the White House expected to review location proposals while the commission develops its recommendations. Chaired by NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman, the panel has 120 days to deliver a comprehensive blueprint covering governance, curriculum, implementation, and the selection of a permanent site.
Although many key details are still being finalized, the executive order reflects the administration's ambition to build a long-term talent pipeline for the nation's civil, military, and commercial space sectors. Once the commission submits its report, any approved recommendations could require additional presidential action, congressional legislation, and funding before the academy becomes a reality.
