One of the biggest changes is the emphasis on education. ChatGPT for Teens includes Study Mode, which is designed to encourage students to understand concepts rather than simply receive answers.

Through parental controls, linked parents can manage settings related to features such as sensitive-content protections, memory, voice mode, image generation, Study Mode, Study Hours, and Quiet Hours. Parents do not receive access to their teen's chat history or private conversations.

OpenAI says that in certain high-risk situations, safety alerts may be triggered without providing parents with complete conversation transcripts.

This creates a balance between parental oversight and a teenager's privacy.

Safety Goes Beyond Content Filters

The teen experience also introduces stronger protections around areas where younger users may face particular risks. These include self-harm, eating disorders, graphic violence, dangerous challenges, and sexual or romantic content.

OpenAI is also attempting to reduce emotional overdependence on AI. The system is designed to avoid presenting itself as a conscious or emotionally attached companion and to encourage healthy relationships with people in the real world.
