Edgbaston's floodlights will be the biggest to light up tomorrow evening in women's T20 cricket. The curtain-raiser of ICC Women's T20 World Cup 2026 will be played between England Women and Sri Lanka Women and the cricket world is watching.
This isn't Match 1 of 33. This is a statement of equality. It is the first of England's home World Cup campaign to which they've been working for years. It marks the start of what will likely be Sri Lanka's biggest game ever. The challenge of both teams is on the table and the stakes are high. Sites such as Diamond Exchange, together with the sites transmitting the games, keep an eye on the details of the relevant games as well as the fluid patterns of the tournaments as they unfold.
The Occasion
But it is important to enjoy a game in its own right before it is bowled. Edgbaston will host the West End cast of Wicked with a live performance on the music and dance theatre show on a specially arranged stage, 20 years after its premiere in Britain. Birmingham's famous amphitheatre will be the place for more than 25 000 people to be snorting and roaring in roaring array. Then at 6:30 PM BST, Nat Sciver-Brunt and Chamari Athapaththu will step out for the toss, kicking off the 10th Women's T20 World Cup.
England Women - Form, Squad & Key Players
England are one of the favourite teams in this tournament, fresh off the batters and with a lot of energy. England, with a new captain in the form of Nat Sciver-Brunt, with whom Knight had to depart a year ago after 15 seasons at the helm, look an even and good-for-the-pound 2-3 finishing outfit which could feet any side anywhere in the world for 100% of the departments.
England had a mixed result in their last 16 matches against India; scoring two wins and three tries, but conceding 376 points in total. The ODI series 1-2 awayokay loss was the hardest to bounce back from, but, they demonstrated resilience — winning the T20I decider when Charlie Dean did not play and then failing to 0-1 on a Sunday only to come from behind and grab a 2-1 away series win!).
Key Players:
England's man of the match Nat Sciver-Brunt (c). Bats in the middle order with the power and intelligence, bowls medium pace and wields over some powers throughout a match. Her fitness had been tracked during her tournament but she should be fit and is the focus on which the England camp builds its World Cup starting kit.
Sophie Ecclestone is one of the top women's bowlers in T20 cricket, and perhaps the finest T20 spinner the world has seen. Left arm orthodox, thrifty in her economical bowling, at the wicket, and a menace while the pitch is playing away. In preparation for Sri Lanka, the batters will have spent a considerable amount of time learning how to deal with her.
Danni Wyatt-Hodge: Openers that attack on ball 1 and is quite combative! Sets the standard for England.
Lauren Filer: The fast bowler who looks the part – but who runs at the system extremely quickly. A good night off are in store for the top-order Sri Lanka sides if Filer produces from the new ball.
Charlie Dean is the most complete bowler around the world following Sciver-Brunt. Runs obtained in an off-spin manner, and runs that are consistently provided.
In 2025, the form blackout against India showed a slight angle of vulnerability of the English form in the bat. They will have to get off to a good start here and not only on the scoreboard, but on their level of confidence entering the tournament.
Sri Lanka Women — Form, Squad & Key Players
Sri Lanka have come into this tournament with experience, hunger and healthy possibilities too. Unfortunately, they went through this year's Women's T20 World Cup without a single victory and evidently it was a learning process for a squad with Chamari Athapaththu, who has plenty of talent to offer. That failure has led to a complete overhaul of the squad and Sri Lanka are looking much better and fresher with the 2026 approach than at any point in recent history.
They've recently been on a pretty decent hot streak. They had beaten West Indies 2-1 in a series of T20Is that they played only a few weeks ago. Hasini Perera and Vishmi Gunarathne have proved to be good hitting pair for Athapaththu. It's the squad of fresh faces, fresh belief, and the new World Cup captain, who is a ten-time World Cup player, no less. It's fresh faces, renewed belief, and a captain who is in his 10th straight World Cup, which is both the hallmark of quality and longevity.
Key Players:
Chamari Athapaththu (c): Sri Lanka's beating heart of cricket. A left-handed strokemaker of fearsome power, she has the ability to single-handedly change the course of any T20 match. She's plugged in to all nine previous editions of this game and is no stranger to big-game starting.
The next generation bat of Sri Lanka- Hasini Perera. She's been a major contributor in recent series and will play a big role at No.1.
Vishmi Gunarathne, a reliable player, who is heading towards cutting Sri Lanka's reliance on Athapaththu with perera to freedom with him.
Harshitha Samarawickrama: Great looking and clear player; can hit fast.
Kaveesha Dilhari is the Sri Lankan player with conducting the most multi-faceted and has served him in perfect well with the bat as well as with the ball.
Sri Lanka's Strength: Chamari Athapaththu. Try playing at numerous World Cups. A team which has developed a broad ranging threat over the past two seasons.
The main flaw they have had in the Sri Lankan team is their spin bowling as historically English surfaces have been less conducive to spin than Asian surfaces. Deeply-rooted at home on the typically flat Edgbaston wicket, England's batters will feel at ease playing spin from the start. Sri Lanka are devoid of any pace threat to challenge England in the powerplay.
The Pitch & Conditions
It is traditionally a good surface for batters; flat, true and high-scoring. They like to rack up runs in the first innings, with totals over 160 not unusual. During this time Birmingham will be partly cloudy, possibly providing some relief for the England swing bowlers early. The bowling department brings in Lauren Filer in the first red-ball over to Edgbaston – and she is very real threat. With a suspense holding the whole cricket fraternity, various viewers continued to keenly follow the development via Diamond Exchange ID and stay immersed within the high octane movement of the ICC T20 World Cup 2026.
Winner: England
